The Magnetic North is actually a south pole. The magnetic field lines go into the pole, thus making it a south pole.

[Magnetic field of magnet vs. magnetic field of earth](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/IhC1iYaFlr1H0S3LoplZiuSQVwfaP4ZH-A2aRVAZl-3jg8dTObzFQpL60i7uie7B3ePIct7AfCCa9LLIyb-Wqm5yRc4BprlCanPTyGgp5VCdtmUJiB3pTUB2L0nj0uaa).

The magnet on the needle is north, so it is attracted to the south (which we call North).

The end of the needle with the N on it is a south magnetic pole, for the reason you cite.
