Data mining in of itself is fairly dry, because it is just the mass collection of data for the purposes of analysis by interested parties.

Take your smartphone for example. There are *thousands* of data points generated by that device, throughout a days useage. There is the macro stuff like what apps you use, how you use them, navigation, call logs, messages, texts, geolocation data from the triangulation of your position, satellite navigation etc. Then there is the micro stuff like acceleration, gait analysis, exercise habits, body temperature etc that can be incredibly personally revealing when analysed properly.

All data is harvested from apps and services running on that phone and sent back to the service provider. A consumer has to agree to this, but sometimes even the most innocuous data point can be used to find out stuff about you.
