Normal sodas use sugar to be sweet. And when we drink them, our bodies treat that sugar the same way we treat sugar from food, breaking it down and turning it into energy for our body. We measure that energy as calories. If we get too much energy from food, more calories than we need, our body stores the extra as fat.
Scientists invented chemicals that trick our bodies into believing that they are sweet the same way sugar is, but that we can’t break down into energy. These artificial sweeteners don’t have any calories, because our bodies can’t use them. However, these chemicals seem like they can have some side effects on our bodies.
I believe there’s some research that they can trick our brains into thinking we’ve had lots of sugar even if we haven’t, but we need more study to know exactly if that’s going to be a serious problem.
