How does drinking a lot of water help our body?

The more the water we drink the more the need we have to pee. So how does it actually help your body when it only consumes the amount of water it requires for its functioning and releases the extra one. Basically i am confused why Doctors recommend drinking 8 or more glasses of water when our body doesn’t retain much of it

Your kidneys job is to filter out bad stuff from your body. It’s only method of doing this uses water, which is mixed with the junk and excreted out as urine. Drinking a lot of water promotes kidneys to function a lot (also why you’re supposed to drink lots of fluids when you’re sick) which helps clean the body out.

8 glasses a day is more of a marketing scheme than a doctor recommendation. There’s no biological need for your urine to be clear instead of yellow (if there was, one would think that animal urine would mostly be clear too, but they don’t over-drink either, cause they don’t need to).

Doctors do not recomend drinking 8 or more glasses of water a day. You are confusing doctors with water bottle manufacturers. You are quite right that the body will get rid of any excess water. In fact drinking too much water can damage your kidneys and mess with your mineral balance, or even if you are not able to pee you might die from too much water as your nerves stop working.

The real advice from doctors is to drink when you are thirsty but not more. Your pee should be golden and not clear.

So the myths saying that drinking a lot of water helps your skin glow, improves your metabolism and reduces your weight are all wrong?

Practically speaking, drinking lots of water only helps when something stressful is going on, and you need to replace water thats been. Your kidneys at peak efficiency, and your breath, lose less than a liter of water a day. That’s what needs to get replaced normally. That’s not a lot of water… Most people aren’t that efficient, so you need more water to make up the balance. The average American is honestly over hydrated, but our diet has enough salt and minerals it doesn’t matter.

Keeping intestinal flow, and such in the GI tract is something to consider as well.
The whole job of the kidney is to regulate the amount of water in the body, it’s good at it unless something bad is happening.

I don’t know that it “helps” your body. It’s more like that it maintains your body. You are basically mostly water, and water is the matrix where most of your body functions take place. It doesn’t take much (too much or too little water) to disrupt normal functions.

Eight glasses is kind of random amount. For someone with a very physical job that number will be greater, and for someone who is very petite/small that number will be smaller. Of course, hydration needs are greater in drier climates and higher temperatures, like summer.
