How does finger tapping on electric guitar play notes if the strings are not being plucked?

Normally you fret a note relatively gently so that the string doesn’t vibrate, then pluck it to start the vibration and produce a sound.

When you tap a note you fret it a lot harder, so that when the string is suddenly stopped by the fret, this jerk causes it to vibrate on its own.
