Gums and teeth are harmed by a build up of bacteria in the mouth. Brushing your teeth removes a lot of it, but some hides between the teeth. These spots serve as “seeds” for the bacteria to spread out from; assuming adequate food, bacteria will increase faster the more you start with. Flossing cleans places that brushing won’t reach. You’ll never be able to get rid of all of them, but it takes longer to rebuild their numbers, keeping the overall amount of bacteria causing damage to a minimum.
