It’s pumped into a cylinder called a piston, where it’s compressed, then ignited, which causes it to explode and push against the piston, that force is used to drive the car/spin the generator, as well as compress the next piston for the next explosion.

There are tiny lighters in the pistons which goes up and down to generate the motion. To do this, they compress air and fuel. The lighters just sparkle a bit and ignite them.
