how does gauge as a measurement work

Because you have a 12 gauge as in a talking shotgun and then you also have a 12 gauge as in a 12 gauge needle which are two completely different sizes but gauge is a unit of measurement so how does that work

Note that “Gauge” comes from the french verb “gauger”, “to measure”.

So if you’re confused why it’s used for so many applications and there is no rhyme or reason between them it’s because it’s just the standard measurement for that particular application and it’s not derived from sort of common measurement system.
