There are already good answers, but just in case this wasn’t clear, “computing power” is not related to the electrical meaning of “power.” No physical power is being transferred.

All computing is just taking an input and following a set of instruction to produce an output.

So you can send someone else’s computer a set of instructions on how to process inputs, then you can send the computer inputs through the internet and it can send the processed outputs back.

It’s like playing chess by mail. You don’t need to have a full simulation of your opponent’s brain to know what move they made. They just send you the result of their deliberations, and then you can act upon that.

It’s like outsourcing math problems. You have a big complex problem to solve, and it would be quicker if you hired someone else to help you with it. So you send them some of it and they work on their part while you work on yours and they send their answer when they’re done.

Instructions are sent to your computer. Your computer follows the instructions, does the computing portion. The results are sent back to the source. It’s sending the ‘problem’ for your pc to solve and then the ‘answer’ gets sent back.
