Energy is the capacity to do work, or work done on a thing (depending on which way you look at the flow. )
To lift an object away from. The earth, you have to do work on it ,(apply a force over a distance). Once that is done the object now has the ability to do the same amount of work as it falls back, i.e.it can now apply that same force (weight) over that same distance ( in reverse). That ability is called “potential energy”.
