Will try to do as best as I can but I’m bad at this.
There’s two types, Opticals and the ultrasonic one (that’s him Samsung called it as least)
For Opticals the idea is that there’s a camera behind the screen (you can see through OLED pixels, that’s why only OLED screens can have them) when you put your finger on the display, this camera, this camera takes a picture of the light reflected by your finger, and if it matches the picture it has saved as your finger the phone will unlock.

For ultrasonic, there’s a “pulse wave” that’s send to your finger, and your finger reflect a part of this pulse wave, creating a 3d image of them. Again, if match the phone unlocks.
