How does international post work?

So, say I’m buying something from the UK that needs to be sent to Croatia. The Royal Mail picks up the package and… then what? From start to finish, does the Royal Post ship it to France where La Poste takes over and and then takes it to their post HQ where they go “oh this needs to go there and there” and puts in on a train to the border with, I don’t know, Germany, where Deutsche Post takes it to their HQ only to send it to the neighboring country and so on until it reaches Croatia, or does Royal Mail just put in on a plane to Croatia directly or… how?

It is an interesting world, regulated by a specific UN agency, the Universal Postal Union (UPU).

Nowadays, planes are used in most cases so, in your example, Royal Mail would put your parcel in a plane to Croatia, and some Croatian mail provider would be compensated for handling and delivering it to its destination. These fees are known as terminal dues and apply to items weighing less than 4.4 lbs (2 kg).
