I’m not fluent in sign language, but a friend is a translator. If I understand him correctly, the first time the word is used in a conversation it’s finger spelled. If it needs to be shortened, the people having the conversation will agree on a sign for it.
If that new word and sign are used enough it slowly becomes more well known. ASL has a lot of regional differences. But it pretty much works the way jargon works anywhere.
