IVF works by artificially helping the sperm and the egg reach each other and combine into a zygote (which can eventually grow into a baby). And then inserting that fertilized egg, or zygote, back into the uterus.

Essentially doctors take egg samples and sperm samples from the people who are trying to have a baby.

They place eggs on multiple Petri dishes, then place sperm on them, and then use a microscope to zoom in and see what eggs and spent successfully combined into a zygote.

One or a few is then placed back Into the uterus to get the zygote to implant into the uteruses wall, and the rest are kept in storage Incase it doesn’t work and they need to try again.

Egg from mother is extracted and introduced to the sperm of the father for insemination. This is done “in vitro” or literally “in glass” ie in a test tube. Then the inseminated egg is reimplanted in the mother (usually donor of the egg). In the case of surrogate gestation, the inseminated egg is implanted into a woman who did not donate the egg.

IVF starts with medication given to the egg donor or mother to make their body create eggs. When the eggs are ready, they collect them with a small surgery. They take mature eggs and generally inject them with sperm. The eggs that fertilize become embryos that grow over the next 3-5 days. At that point they are either frozen or implanted, and they may take some cells from the embryos to do genetic testing as well.

For a frozen embryo, they give the surrogate or mother medication to get their body ready to receive the embryo. They confirm everything is ready with testing, and then defrost and transfer the embryo directly. Pregnancy can be confirmed in the next 7-10 days usually.
