your body stops the bullet, the kevlar just spreads the impact out enough you don’t end up with a hole in you while doing so.

you are giving the bullet something to waste energy on before it reaches your skin and making it wider so it can’t poke into you as well

kevlar is very strong as a material and kevlar body armor is many layers of tightly woven fabric made of it. this results in (usually many) thick layers that are very hard to puncture.

the bullet might compromise a few of the top layers, but eventually it hits one it cannot and even the damaged layers deform the projectile and wastes it’s energy. once it hits a layer it doesn’t break through then as it hits the next layers it is getting wider and wider as the fabric wraps around it and slower and slower as it has to pull each layer unto the forming depression as it goes.

it still hurts like hell most of the time & sometimes even leaves a wound, but it is far better than just getting shot the old fashioned way.
