How does Kevlar stops bullets?

The simplest way to put it is that when it comes to stopping something like a bullet there’s 2 ways. One is to be really hard and when the bullet hits it, the bullet becomes damaged and can’t make it through. This is going to be something like a trauma plate in a Kevlar vest. The second way is to literally “catch” the bullet, which is what the Kevlar is for. When the bullet hits the Kevlar it’s goal isn’t just to stop the bullet dead in its tracks. It focuses on stretching and displacing the energy over a larger area. This slows the bullet down enough it can’t go through the vest. Which is also why it only stops up to a certain round because it can’t slow them down enough to keep from penetrating.

The mechanism at work for that is best explained with women’s shoes (odd right?). If a woman steps on your foot with the heel of a stiletto, all that weight gets pushed down onto that single little point. So her weight is all focused on that small section making it hurt. However if the same girl steps on your foot with wedges or a tennis shoe, all her weight is even distributed over a larger area, reducing the total overall force.
