How does lead exposure lead to mental health problems in children and why is it hard to remove from the bloodstream?

I was reading an article about lead poisoning in children and it has me wondering how lead exposure damages your brain. From a quick search it seems like it can cause obsessive compulsive tendencies, and sensory problems. Do we have an answer as to why this happens?

Your body can’t really tell the difference between lead and calcium so when lead is present it gets absorbed as though it were calcium. That means it can get stored in the bones like calcium.
Interesting side note: I heard that lead paint chips can leave an aftertaste that is similar to that we get from chocolate. For small children it can remind them of treats because of that and that is why they often ingest lead. Note- DO Not Taste Paint Chips to Verify!
