There may be more than one mechanism.

The simplest mechanism involves a hormone in adipose tissue called peripheral aromatase that converts testosterone into estrogen.

does that mean women who lose weight also have more typically male body reaction for a while?

Okay, so testosterone is this manly hormone (all jacked up like a gym trainer) and motivates different tissues in the body like muscles to grow. Adipose tissue has a unique feature called “join the estrogen club (there’s free cookies which eould be the enzime aromatase) and so, the gym trainer testosterone gives itself a break and enters, only that cookies are soooo good he becomes estrogen now, which behaves in a more femenin way. Therefore, reducing the adipose tissue, reduces the conversion of testosterone into estrogen, increasing the amount of the first one.
