Once upon a time there was a guy named Milo. Milo was born alongside a calf. Throughout his life he always lifted the calf up and down, every day, until he grew up. The calf grew up with him to become a cow and over the course of his life Milo became the strongest man in Greece.
Muscles grow as we train them. If you kick over an ant hill, you’ll notice that it gets rebuilt stronger than before. The same thing happens with muscles, as you stress them, they respond by healing stronger/bigger/etc.
Best simple 5 year old explanation I could do 😛
Muscles are made up of bundles of tiny fibres. When we use our muscles, some of these fibres will snap. To make sure it doesn’t happen again, we’ll tend to regrow a slightly thicker bundle of fibres. Doing this over and over again leads to building muscles. Basically, we’re continually breaking muscles and forcing our bodies to try harder.
