“Muscle memory” is a misleading name. The memory is still in your brain. It could be called *subconscious* memory, because what happens is you learn to do something without thinking about it.

This is important for skills where you need to do many things at the same time – such as bicycling, where you need to constantly make many small corrections to keep upright on top of stepping on the pedals and watching where you’re going.

When you’re about to tip over, you don’t have time to think about which way to lean and which way to pull the handle. You need to do that reflexively, without thinking. This is something our brains are designed for, you just need to practice enough to get it down.
