How does NBA work? How can they just exchange players mid-season and still consider the same “team”?

Teams in all major sports are corporate entities that own the name and logo. Players on the team are employees of the team. If somebody is trying to capture what you are thinking of, they would have to be specific: “that specific team we had in February”. Otherwise, “team” will always be understood to refer to the club, not its players.

In a way, it’s the same as any person. We all shed and regrow cells from our body such that every seven years, our body undergoes a complete replacement except for the kidneys. Are you the same person? Of course. Or consider somebody who learns another language. Is that “the same person” as they were before?
