How does nitrogen narcosis work?

I had to dive to 130 and then write my name backwards on a slate. Couldn’t do it. I was only at 130 feet for 10 min and had to surface…slowly. I was told that I was narced and that was why I was impaired when it came to writing my name. Not much to see at 130 feet.
