Our body’s immune system detects the pathogens or any foreign particles in our body and responds by releasing a few immune mediators and cytokines. These cytokines set the base temperature of the hypothalamic thermoregulatory system higher. Then the hypothalamus produces some systemic responses by releasing hormones that increases the body temperature to match that higher set point.

That’s how we get a fever.
