Because your skin is stretch and flexible, very much like rubber. If you take a rubber band and stretch it or wrap it around something and then undo it, it will go back to its original shape and size. Our skin has proteins called collagen and elastin that act very much like the rubber band and allow our skin to move, stretch, and compress to a substantial degree.

It’s kind of like a bouncy castle. The indentation creates changes in pressure that eventually pop back up. There’s a lot of deeper understanding regarding osmosis and whatnot, but it’s pretty simple

Fluids keep pumping and eventually pump it back to normal.

Sweating and plain old blood pumping.

Sometimes, not always, my body will “overcorrect” and I’ll get a welt where the object was pressing into my flesh
