We never really think about it but the entire mechanics of how we feel and register physical feeling through our finger tips and the rest of our body is a complete mystery to me. what is ever more perplexing is how some area’s of the body are more sensitive to feel than others. then the BIG question of how on earth all of those sensors become connected over such a distance and not lose signal? i look forward to your responses and explanations!

We have special types of sensory cells in our bodies called mechanoreceptors (4 different types specifically for different aspects of touch, eg pressure). These cells convert the physical aspects of touch into an electric signal that is then relayed to peripheral nerves nearby, which then feed into the spinal cord which ultimately sends the signal to the part of our brains that convert the electrical signal into a sense of touch.

More sensitive areas like the hands have more mechanoreceptors, allowing them to perceive touch in greater detail.

The sensors aren’t connected to each other, they all feed into their respective nerves which coalesce in the brain. Your brain is responsible for collecting all the different signals from stimuli and turning it into something you can interpret
