How does punch strength comes from the back muscles?

I feel like it should come form the pecs or the triceps because it’s a “pushing” motion.. no?

A really solid punch gets it’s energy from rotating your whole upper body and shoulders. you use your body weight to drive the punch.

your back muscles (and abs) are important for that kind of twisting, rotating motion.

I think the question might be misleading. Primary back muscle groups for boxers are the rhomboids, Lats, and posterior deltoids.

The rhomboids and posterior deltoids are important for striking. They are the muscle groups on the back that support your shoulders. Your lats help stabilize just about everything else, from your lower spine to your neck and even your shoulders.

While these muscle groups are extremely important they aren’t isolated to increased striking pounds. They help support you with the stability needed to follow through the punch. It’s your core that really generates the power that drives the punch. But a punch generally uses nearly every muscle group in the body.

The punch comes from the legs and works it’s way up through the hips, the core, then chest, shoulders and finally the arm and hands.

Legs provide an anchor and forward/pivoting motion, the hips generate force through the twist and stretching of the core muscles and separating from the shoulder and upper body motion. (Kind of like a rubber band) once the muscles contract upwards the chest pulls the arm and the shoulders drive to strike.

You can see a very similar function in Baseball when looking at batters swing.

TLDR; it’s not the shoulder “really”… it’s the entire body.

no single muscle does anything useful. it takes groups of muscles to ‘ambulate’ or move anything.

lets say your arm was in a cast for a year… you could still punch but it would be weak. if you were in a back brace for a year but did arm exercises the punch would still be weak.

if you didn’t have legs your punch would be weaker…

all good strong muscles are much more effective than any one super strong muscle.
