Seriously though, just stick a cylindrical container outside and measure the water level after a given time. They often have a funnel at the top to prevent evaporation.

Rain is measured in centimetres per square meter. They put out a collection vessel with markings that would correspond with enough water to fill 1cm in a square meter container and measure.

If you measure the volume of rain (measured in cubic centimeters) that falls over a given area (measured in square centimeters), you get a result in cm^3 / cm^2 . Simplify your units, you get centimeters.
