Last election, if Bernie had run as a third candidate he could have siphoned off enough votes grom Biden to allow Trump to win. So many voters, whose primary goal was to get Trump out of office, would have voted for Biden even though they may prefer Bernie. Ranked choice would allow them to vote for Bernie first and Biden second without fear that their vote for Bernie would allow Trump to win.
It could free us from the two party system by letting voters express their real desire instead of playing it safe. Which is why both parties generally fight it.
