It’s the oils in the walnut.

When you rub the walnut on the wood, it leaves behind small pieces of itself and plenty of the oils that are in the nut, those oils then form the layer over the scratch that hides the scratch and makes it feel smoother.

So there’s still a scratch in the wood, it’s just been covered up.

I assume we are talking about the edible part of the walnut, and not the shell?
