If you touch/hold any metal you’d find around your house (coins etc.) you are literally taking layers off of the surface of the metal and depositing it on your hands which is why your hands smell awful (unless you like the smell, I guess) if you hold coins for too long.

Aluminium is a bit more resistant because it has an oxide coating but that is easily taken off by scraping another metal object against it which leaves trace amounts of aluminium metal on the thing you scraped it with (a fork, in this case). It’s not much, but it’s enough that you can taste it.

In other words, you are literally eating small amounts of metal.
