How does screen printing work?

I’m just confused how spreading paint can make such intricate and layered designs.

A mask is placed over a screen where you don’t want paint to go through. The screen is placed over a shirt or whatever you want to paint, paint is placed on the screen and pushed through the areas where it is unmasked. Additional layers may be added once the first layer dries for different colors.
