How does sleep paralysis work? Why do you sometimes feel like somebody is watching you?

TIL that some people feel like they are being watched when they sleep.

Do many people have this?

Normally when you sleep your body tends to stay in a sort of locked position, reason being that it prevents you from moving in response to your dreams.

Sleep paralysis is when your mind wakes up before the rest of your body. You’re still in a dream like state so you see things as if you were still dreaming and also why you’d be paralyzed. Your body hasn’t woken up yet, so you can’t move yet.

I’m not sure, but in case of sleep paralysis, the brain releases a substance that paralyses you during sleeping, in order not wander around and stuff, and I think it makes have hallucinations, which might explain dreams, but when you wake up while still having this substance in brain you are paralyzed and have hallucinations. But I’m not 100% sure still.

EDIT: this would also explain my condition. I don’t remember any dreams, never. And I have sometimes issues with getting up at night during sleep. The lack of this substance would explain it
