how does someone, e.g. a detective distinguish if a stab wound is made before or after death?

Don’t worry this isn’t anything alarming. I’m in the process of writing a whodunit and I just want to know if there are any signs that occur/do not occur in a stab wound that is made after death? Any answers would be a great deal of help. Thanks!

Blood pooling, if the stabbing occurred post mortem, then you would see minimal blood loss, blood loss doesn’t occur because the heart stops beating, less blood flow

If it was made before death theres evidence of the body starting to heal itself usually i cant remember the specifics but ik thats the basics where once your dead the body no longer makes the attempt to repair the damage

Because dead tissue reacts differently than live tissue. If the stab wound was imminently after death, maybe not, but the tissue would swell if alive

In forensic pathology, the term used is **vital response**, and refers to the visual and biochemical markers that distinguish pre- and post-mortem wounds.

I have a degree in forensic pathology/anthropology and the amount of concerning replies here…well…there’s a lot. And they’re accurate for the most part. A little too accurate.

You’re all under arrest.
