Basically, all memories fade slowly over time, so they need to be reinforced by repeating them.

So when you learns someone’s name, you can probably remember it for 5 minutes.

If you repeat it after 3 minutes, then you can probably remember for 10 min.

And then it probably skyrockets, since your brain realizes that It needs to remember it.

The better you know something, the less often you need to reinforce it.
