How does tattoo removal work?

I just [watched this video](https://redd.it/169l7s6) can someone explain how this process works and how they are removing the ink so well.

I’ve only heard of laser treatment that takes multiple sessions to fade the tattoo. This seems to work instantly

This is laser, that person will likely need several treatments though. It looks like the ink is gone but it’s in a lower level of skin. The top layer of skin is inflamed right now but once that inflammation subsides you will see the ink again. He might be lucky and only need a couple sessions. He might end up needing a dozen, no way to predict.

I only do saline removal when an eyebrow tattoo goes wrong, so, I don’t know a TON about laser removal. But there are different wavebands that each act on a different color of pigment. For example if you hit red pigment that contained titanium dioxide with the wrong spectrum it can turn black. Particularly with eyebrows they end up yellow. BUT then you can use a different laser that targets the yellow.

Also we don’t know how long this person had the tattoo. If it was a fresh tattoo those are easier to remove. During the healing process your skin sends immune cells to the area and tries to remove the pigment. The pigment that can’t be removed it then surrounds with macrophage cells, which results in ‘locking’ the pigment in the skin.

But this video like much on the internet is not really a true representation of the whole process.
