The map is wrong. The water starts from the Great Lakes and flows to the oceans on both sides. The Great Lakes gets its water from rainfall and other smaller rivers feeding it, which also gets their water from rainfall.
This is not accurate the Atlantic does not flow into the great Lakes. Rain from a large portion of the US and Canada drains into the great Lakes or other rivers which then flow into the atlantic.
Water flows from the great lakes and rivers into the Atlantic because they are higher up. Stuff flows down hill.
