[This is a general outline of the connectivity.](https://imgur.com/7PKkovd) How do the Great Lakes end up as fresh water if there is a constant flow in from the salty Atlantic? And where does the water get the energy to flow in this way?

The map is wrong. The water starts from the Great Lakes and flows to the oceans on both sides. The Great Lakes gets its water from rainfall and other smaller rivers feeding it, which also gets their water from rainfall.
