How does the body adapts to seasickness?

On our honeymoon to Norway my wife and I were on a boat from Bergen to Stavanger on a hydrofoil, and the seas were very rough. I was just about throwing up, when some ex-Viking gets on and proceeds to start drinking a huge beer as we are swaying up and down for an hour. The body must simply get used to the feeling and once you expect the movement it must not bother you anymore, kind of like after you work at a perfume shop, you don’t really smell it anymore.
