Your muscles need oxygen if they are to do anything, and this oxygen is taken to them by blood. Faster beating of the heart means faster blood flow means more available oxygen.

So, there are two things that can happen that accelerate your heart. You can be exerting yourself, so your muscles demand more oxygen and make your heart beat faster – or something happens that makes your brain suspect your muscles will soon be exerting themselves, and it gets the blood flowing in preparation.

Usually, your heart will beat just fast enough to get oxygen to where it needs to be in just the right amount.
