This is because your eye is really sensitive, and it doesn’t like when something gets on it. That’s why it gets irritated. It’s kind of like how you might feel if you had a rock in your shoe or if you wore a shirt that was too scratchy. Your eye is trying to tell you that something is not right and that it needs your help to feel better

there’s a very thin layer of tissue that covers the white part of your eye, as well as the inside of your eyelid. this is called conjunctiva! just like the skin on your face, the conjunctiva is innervated so that it can feel touch. the conjunctiva (as well as the cornea, which is the transparent layer covering the pupil and iris) is very sensitive to touch, so that any irritant can be quickly noticed and cleared out before damage to the eye can occur.

Just like your skin, your eyes has tons of nerves that react if something touches them.
Those send a signal to the brain, which then decides to run the irritated-eye-protocol.
