there’s a very thin layer of tissue that covers the white part of your eye, as well as the inside of your eyelid. this is called conjunctiva! just like the skin on your face, the conjunctiva is innervated so that it can feel touch. the conjunctiva (as well as the cornea, which is the transparent layer covering the pupil and iris) is very sensitive to touch, so that any irritant can be quickly noticed and cleared out before damage to the eye can occur.
