Our magnetic poles form from the movement of iron and nickel within our planet. It can be pretty easily found with any compass or magnetometer.

It moves when the convection of that iron and nickel within our planet shifts.

they know it has moved because compasses will move. A lot of airline navigation is based on magnetic headings, so charts regularly have to be updated as the magnetic pole moves.
