There are 32 NFL teams, and 7 rounds of drafting. Each team is allowed to pick one player per round of drafting, for a total of 224 new players. Each round, every team selects one new player to add to their roster.

The order in which the teams are assigned picks is determined by their performance in the previous NFL season, with the worst-performing teams being given the first picks, while the super bowl winners are given the last pick. Spots 1-20 are determined by regular season standings, whole 21-32 are determined by post-season standings. Teams are also allowed to trade picks with each other, usually for other players. For instance, if my team has a very good pick slot, but I don;t see any new players I particularly want, I might chose to trade that pick for a player from another team.
