Nuvaring works very similar to contraceptive pills. It releases estrogen and progesteron (etonogestrel) when it’s in, and there’s a week without external hormones, when you take it out, and you have your period. (Not a real period per se, but withdrawal bleeding). With that said, I have no idea why you’re less anxious on the week off. I don’t know about anxiety being a common side effect, but I’ve never used it, nor I am a doctor
I had mood changes on the NuvaRing too. It isn’t very common but it can happen. In my case, i wasn’t compatible with the combination of hormones it had even though it is low-dose. I ended up switching to Yaz which actually helped my underlying mood issues.
I would suggest discussing other birth control options with your doctor.
