Some really do make a lot of money, because they consistently produce high quality attractive videos that attract a lot of viewers.
But its not cheap to do so. Sure some people can have a one-off success that’s cheap. But to do it week after week takes hard work and lots of money reinvested in their video production business.
It costs a lot of money to make really good, attractive videos. One needs expensive video, sound, editing and lighting equipment. Money for props, or for traveling or whatever things they are featuring on the channel. Money for support staff, writers, researchers, set crew etc.
Youtube likes to promote this myth that many Youtubers are getting rich because it attracts more content, more contributors and more views. But the reality is most Youtubers aren’t making much money. The ones that are really work hard at it – and they can’t keep all their money, its continuously reinvested in new content.
A few reasons:
YouTube pays per view – a tiny amount when you are looking at videos getting thousands of views, but if you managed to get a million views instead, that is ten thousand times more. Ten thousand tiny payments can add up to a pretty respective number…
Sponsorship is also a big thing – brands will pay sponsorship to videos and channels to advertise their name, which nets a creator more – every time you see a youtuber telling you about a VPN service or wireless doorbell, they have been paid money to do that.
They may also make money doing other work – Linustechtips for example make YouTube videos as the mainstay of their business, but they also produce other video content for other companies that you will never see on their channels. So they are using the same skillset as they use for their own content, just selling it commercially as a studio too.
Finally a lot of YouTubers have other jobs or incomes – Mark Rober is well known for having had a career with NASA, and a lot of very successful channels are made as a hobby for the creators who have jobs elsewhere through the week.
