How does thunder produce different pitches and intensity of sounds?

Thunder is the sound of lightening it can sound different if it is striking the ground which is more of a bang or if it’s striking another cloud which is more rolling. Distance can have an effect as well because the higher pitched sounds don’t travel as far.
