I’m not aware of any good-quality studies looking at the subject that have been published to date- in large part because cannabis’s status as a schedule I drug in the US generally precludes most serious research.
Science says there is no change in weight loss.
There is one theoretical exception: certain inflammatory diseases. Inflammation leads to water retention. Water retention leads to weight gain.
Another way it promotes weight loss: if food isn’t available, it makes hunger less painful. I have known plenty of poor people to use cannabis as an appetite suppressant when they ran out of money for food.
