How does Vick’s Vaporub work?

Seriously, how does something like that work? You just rub it in some parts of your body and BOOM! Cough is no more. How?

It doesn’t and they no longer advertise that it does. When you have a cold and are all stuffed up you can’t smell much at all, but you can smell Vicks, so you think it’s doing something.
