There’s a solenoid on the cam that locks it in place with a bigger cam at a certain RPM. So at low RPM you get better MPG due to using less fuel and air, at higher RPM with the more aggressive cam profile, it let’s in more air and fuel which means more power, or rather the rest of the engines power.
