how does wearing glasses slow my vision from getting worse?

Does it? My vision has been the same (a slightly myopic -0.75) for 15+ years and I rarely wear glasses or lenses. My girlfriend does wear glasses (her vision is a lot worse, different on each eye and with astigmatism), and it changes to the extent that she needs new glasses every 3 years or so.

It doesn’t, I’ve worn glasses since I was 10, 25 now, my vision is still worsening over the years. What you are referring too is probably that if you need prescription glasses, you should use them, because otherwise you will be constantly straining your eye muscles to try and see.

Not strainin gyour eyes is better than straining your eyes.

Occasionally there are conditions that glasses are a treatment for, but in most cases they are an accommodation, not a treatment. It’s like insulin for a diabetic: it doesn’t cure you, it makes you functional while you are using it.

It doesn’t.

But *not* using glasses when you need them will lead to eyestrain, which accelerates sight degradation.

In general, vision changes are the most extreme in childhood and adolescence, and become more stable during adulthood. More stable does not mean unchanging, plenty of people still experience worsening vision, but the changes might be smaller. For example, when I was younger, my vision prescription would basically double every year. While it is still going up, the changes are much smaller now, even when accounting for how high my prescription is.

Not wearing glasses when you need them causes eye strain and headaches and in children it might cause eye problems like lazy eye, but it won’t change how your vision changes. This is because nearsightedness is related to your eye shape and glasses have no impact on that.
